Water breakthrough from a lower production zone was causing a major issue with production in an offshore Angola well. The well was completed with 5½-inch sand screens and a 9⅝-inch open-hole gravel pack. The client required a solution to reduce water cut in order to maximise oil production and optimise storage capacity on the FPSO.

Water breakthrough in a constrained sand-screen completion

To reduce water cut, the client had limited operational capability for intervention. Maintaining production from the well was imperative, meaning cement was not a viable option due to the liability associated with placing it in the production zone.

Annular isolation was required through the sand screens; however, there were only limited solutions available that could achieve this within the existing completion.

BiSN wel-lok™ Technology

A wel-lok™ Water Shut-Off (WSO) tool was proposed. The 4.125-inch Alloy-on-Heater tool was capable of passing through the 4.312-inch minimum restriction in the completion.

The tool was set inside the 5½-inch sand screen at a deviation of 77 degrees, where it provided a barrier extending outward through the gravel pack to the 9½-inch open hole, achieving annular isolation of the lower production zone.

Results

Successful deployment with significant water reduction

The wel-lok™ WSO tool was successfully deployed on wireline, set, and tagged at depth. Following installation, water production was significantly reduced.

About the application

The wel-lok™ WSO (Water Shut Off) has been specifically developed to reduce unwanted water production from wells with sand screen and open hole gravel pack completions (OHGP). Unlike any other solution on the market, the wel-lok™ WSO tool seals the annulus and the wellbore in one operation without the need to perforate the sandscreen or squeeze the alloy into the open hole annulus. The melted alloy fills inside the completion and in the annulus to form a metal to metal sealing solution that is seamless, significantly reducing unwanted water production.
