New Era for Well P&A as Largest Bismuth Plug Deployed

October 24th, 2018 by

BiSN, the global leader in metal-to-metal downhole sealing solutions, has achieved a world first in conjunction with AkerBP and Altus Intervention, through the successful deployment of the largest-ever bismuth plug.

Following over a year of development, BiSN’s award-winning Wel-lok M2M technology – which can be utilised during well and rigless well abandonment – was deployed via E-line in collaboration with Altus Intervention in AkerBP’s Valhall A-30 well in the Norwegian North Sea.

The Wel-lok M2M technology aims to bring substantial savings to operators by eliminating rig costs and doing the work rigless.

Conducted as a field trial, the tool was set to evaluate the effectiveness of bismuth as a permanent seal for P&A operations in lieu of cement. With 3,500 kg of bismuth alloy, a gas tight surface seal was created inside 18 5/8” casing through a section milled window cut in the 13 3/8” casing, entering previously unchartered territory regarding weight, size and precise setting procedures.

BiSN chief executive officer, Paul Carragher, said: “This project is an important step towards the adoption of bismuth well sealant technology. Wel-lok M2M drastically reduces the rig time needed to complete well abandonments (P&A) through the use of thermite heaters to melt bismuth-based alloys.

“We are fundamentally changing the way downhole sealing is carried out, and through trials like this, we continue to break the mould of traditional methods, changing the way operators look at well abandonment.”

Speaking about the project, Martin Straume, P&A Engineering Manager at AkerBP told us: “AkerBP is proud to be in front of the development of Bismuth as a barrier element with respect to Plug and Abandonment. In addition, this installation is proving that there is great savings potential in performing rigless P&A.”

Cathrine Bjaarstad, President Norway & Denmark, Altus Intervention said: “This project clearly demonstrates Altus Intervention’s ability to deliver innovative solutions and assist operators in resolving downhole challenges, adding value to their operations whilst creating both cost and time-savings”.

Putting A Spotlight On BiSN Downhole Technology

July 31st, 2018 by

We believe that sharing our insights is integral to BiSN’s continued growth and success. In recent months, our applications manager Jeff Fulks has been on a whirlwind European tour, highlighting the advantages of using BiSN downhole technology.

From Romania to Denmark, followed by Norway and ending in Aberdeen, he has certainly been busy – and even managed to fit in some golf along the way!

Jeff’s European Tour Summary

It was fantastic to have another great trip across the pond where I got to visit some new and interesting destinations. The trip started in Bucharest, Romania, where I had the pleasure of presenting on BiSN downhole technology to a new audience at the SPE Workshop: Well Integrity in Mature Fields: Challenges and Perspectives.

I was then off to Copenhagen, Denmark, to discuss BiSN technology and results from recent testing with a client and his colleagues from three additional countries via teleconference. From there I set off for Stavanger, Norway, where I was greeted by more clients eager to learn more about our innovative Wel-lok M2M downhole technology.

I also got to enjoy a little leisure time in Stavanger, playing a round of golf and cruising down the fjords before hiking to the top of Preikestolen.  The trip ended in my new “home away from home”, Aberdeen, Scotland, where I had the privilege of exhibiting and presenting at the SPE Late Life & Abandonment Conference.

It’s great to be home but I’m already looking forward to my next adventure where I can spread the word about BiSN. Want to see where I’ll be next or learn more about Wel-lok M2M Sealing Solutions? Visit us at bisn.com

BiSN Downhole Sealing Solutions Achieves Double First With Innovative Tool Deployment In Azerbaijan

July 25th, 2018 by

BiSN, the global leader in metal-to-metal downhole sealing solutions, has achieved a double first with the successful deployment of its pioneering sealing solution in Azerbaijan.

The award-winning company also marked the first tool setting on telecoil in its history during the project, carried out on behalf of an operator active in the region.

Utilising their unique tubing seal, Wel-lok M2M TS™ EXD, which was run and set in the well via telecoil, BiSN was able to achieve the client’s aim of isolating a producing zone in order to perforate and produce a new zone higher in the well.

BiSN chief executive officer, Paul Carragher, said: “Our tools are typically set on electric line as we need the electrical current to activate our unique thermite heater.

However, for highly deviated wells it is difficult to get the tools past the deviation as you rely on gravity to get them to depth – and the more deviated it is the less gravity helps.

“Utilising telecoil allowed us to push the tool into the well without relying on gravity, while still supplying the electricity needed to set our tool. This is the first time our tool has been set using this configuration and we are delighted to have successfully carried it out, paving the way for even more innovative uses for our technology.”

The project completion is another milestone in an exciting year for BiSN downhole sealing solutions, which has received numerous accolades in recognition of its achievements, most recently winning the Outstanding Innovation award at the inaugural Decom North Sea Awards.

Flying The Flag For BiSN Downhole Technology

May 21st, 2018 by

Over the course of 2018 so far, our downhole technology team has traveled across the world, flying the BiSN flag at trade shows, exhibitions and conferences.

We made a special visit to Aberdeen for the Offshore Achievement Awards and what a memorable night it was! We were delighted to win both the Innovator and Great Company (SME) categories; testament to the hard work of everyone in the BiSN family.

Other highlights include our CEO Paul Carragher’s visit to Myanmar to present at the SPE: Frontier Deepwater Development workshop. These efforts are all part of our push into the market here and we are looking forward to running our first tools in the region later this year.

Our Applications Manager, Jeff Fulks has been clocking up the air miles, representing BiSN at the SPE Aberdeen Annual Sand Management Euroforum, as well as visiting Saudi Arabia.

Closer to home, we have been kept busy in Texas, attending both the SPE/ ICoTA Coiled Tubing and Well Intervention Conference & Exhibition and the IADC/SPE Drilling Conference & Exhibition.

Our travels have also taken us to Malaysia and Australia and culminated in May when we exhibited at OTC Houston. We were delighted to be chosen to present on ‘Well Abandonment Solutions Utilizing Bismuth and Thermite,’ within the conference’s technical programme, at what is one of the world’s most respected offshore events.

Where next? We will be returning to Aberdeen for Decom Offshore 2018 this month and are also looking forward to attending the inaugural Decom North Sea Awards. We have been shortlisted for the Outstanding Innovation Award – fingers crossed!
